Question Class Linked to Race In GW2 Would They?

Im starting to get worried that it will be since in all the stuff and interviews we keep hearing about them.
For example how the asura keep getting called a magical race and norns a fighting race.

Im just not sure if arenanet would do this though?
Alot of people will want to play as a certian race with a certian class. I would want to be a asura ranger for example.

GW1 you can identify what class they are by there armor but since in GW2 it seems like armor isnt going to be class specific. So maybe having certian races linked to profesions is there new way? so you can go hes a asura so he is either the necro, rit or ele.

ArenaNet would be idiotic if they didn't allow all races to become all classes due to the necessary balance of racial traits. Even after 2.5 years, World of Warcraft, which has a certain about of classes limited to a certain amount of races for lore reasons, has distinct discrepencies in between classes of one race than another (best example is Priests, which get unique skills depending on race)

In fact, I fully expect ArenaNet to ignore racial traits entirely to avoid the hassle of balancing them for PvP.

I have a feeling the Norn exist because Asura would look stupid with a hammer. I can certainly see the logic behind such a decision. Maybe humans will be the only universal race?

XD... iagine Asura 'Warriors': Une tiny asura riding a golem-mecha. XD

That would be cool. They could mount and unmount anywhere... imagine them leaving the armor to bit your knees, XD

that would be my feeling aswell in regards to humans getting all professions but maybe the other races would get more specialised versions of the them. for example charr instead of getting a ranger class would get archer class instead which is the same but still different.

My big problem with this though is in every online game i have seen humans or human type races are always the most popular and i feel GW2 will be no different.
Im sure there is loads of GW1 players who cant wait to play as other races but many will stick with humans.
Most people like to feel a connection to there character which is why many stay with the human races rather then the others since its much harder to feel connected to something that resembles nothing about you or your traits.
I predict that in GW2 humans will be most played followed by the norn then asura and charr last. the other race we dont really know enough about yet.

Other issue with races is also that if it does work out with one or two most played races it would probably mean that more resources would be dedicated to making stuff for them. This has happened in other games where races become neglected by the developers because they arnt played as much.

Yep - same here.
Although I would REALLY love to see a Norn mesmer!

Do we actually have confirmation that GW2 will have classes? Perhaps there won't be classes at all, and it will be just a matter of what skills each player chooses to have on their bar. And if the skills are going to be more generic, you might not have "hammer" skills and "swords" skills, but rather just melee skills that will work regardless of whether you are a Norn with a war hammer or an Asura with a Battle (Tooth) Pick.

Too early to say, I think.

I think they have already said there will be professions but that they where working to make sure each one worked for both solo and group play. Its going to be a real shame if they do limit them as certian classes will become more popular.

If they are going too much the WoW route, they should cancel GW2 right away.

Racial abilities and the probably still existing connection of PvE and PvP in regards of skills would cause more evil than good.

MUST BE CHARR RANGER, FFS!
MUST BE ASURA ELE, NOOB!
MUST BE NORN BEAR TANK, OLOLOLOL, HUMAN NOOB!

ANet learned from the failures of the past to move on and make new, even worse mistakes? We do not know... we can just hope the best.

A.net would be smart to stay away from certain races having an advantage in traits over another. It's a very idiotic mechanic that is never balanced properly.

hasnt it been confirmed though that each race will have advantages i think it has already been said that when a norn changes into a half human/bear it gets increased health and melee damage.

guess this could be a good reasion to limit classes as like others said if you choose something different you might get shunned by alot of players.
its already pretty bad in GW1 if you dont have the exact build that they want.

I wonder if monsters stay "smart AI" or get "dump AI" like in WoW etc.

I mean, what make Guild Wars work too is that monsters got actual builds to use and they don't just attack move and spam one ability. So far I know, no other commercial popular MMO game use more than "attack move AI" expect in bosses where they go with two waypoints usually and spam same spells.

PvP balance isn't the only reason racial traits are bad. It kills creativity. Why create a Charr Elementalist if Asura have better racial traits for the profession? You end up with everyone intelligent running the same class under the same race simply because it works the best. Why gimp your character by choosing a non-optimal race for it (outside of roleplaying)?

I sincerely hope ANet doesn't go for race-class links in Guild Wars 2, but I fear it may be too late. They've already indicated that Asura are powerful with magic and Norn are great fighters.

That said, the idea of Asura hammer warriors or Norn assassins and mesmers... is slightly mind-boggling.

For all we know, there could be a major overhaul of the professions in Guild Wars 2 that is yet to be announced.

Hmm i would like to see all professions for all races. But i would like to see some racial advantages. Now this is the way i would excpet it to be.

Norn Ranger
Pros: Increased beast mastery attributes. Can summon hawk to explore nearby region.
Cons: Slow.

Asura Ranger
Pros: Can use magic to power up their bows and arrows. Can easily hide.
Cons: Bad at beast mastery.

Charr Ranger
Pros: Very quick. Can detect (smell) hidden enemies.
Cons: Bad at setting traps.

Those are just examples to show you how each rase has some pros at playing certain proffesions but it also have some cons. I don't excpet them to be like this but those are just ideas.

Dont think so. Balancing it would be too painful. Plus it promotes racism .-.

Imo, Anet is just gonna use the races to increase visual diversity.

Skill diversity might be linked to specific factions, but not race. Like a Dwarf would be aligned to Charr and have Charr PvE skills. That sort of thing.

Besides...i want my Asura-ssasin!!

First thing to do with Vekk: Give him big hammer and see what happens.

Oh yea, and racial bonuses are bad idea, even if they all have pluss and minues.

Komes ideas are example how they are bad:

Asura with pet? lolololol
*kick from party*

GLF Trapper, no charrs.

What? kick that norn, he would only slow us down, we want to do this fast, not wait for him. Get us ashuran barrager, ffs.
*kick*

etc... For every job there will be optimal race/class combo, those outside that might be accepted only by very desperate groups or by groups which dont really play to win.

Class and racial linkage would be terribly disappointing, as would racial traits. Please don't allow either.

I am really not liking the Idea of races even...

It's all good as long as they all have the same stats. No racial bonus. Maybe different emotes, but nothing that impacts gamplay..

No plus/minus. No racial skills (unless accessible to other races as well) No class limitations. Then I might not mind the idea. I'll still be playing Human though.

In my honest opinion it makes sense.
Can understand why people start tugging the whinebell but this isn't the case here.
For instance: Mursaat were called a race of powerful spellcasters hence only the Jades have ranger and warrior skills. Why? they are a summoned entity by the Mursaat themselves, hence having no corpse.
Another good argument is that I don't see an Asuran wielding a hammer/axe.
All those thinking it a form of racism if the crossclass diversification would be prevented is a bit moot imo.
It's just a game.
"I can't be an Asuran Ranger." or "Man, I won't be able to play a Norn mesmer." for instance.
It adds to the lore and that's it.
